1.0 PURPOSE :
To have a procedure for the safety monitoring while handling of solvents.
2.0 SCOPE:
It covers all the department where solvent is used.
3.0 RESPONSIBILITY :
Stores officer and Safety officer
4.0 PROCEDURE:
4.1 Storage of Solvent:
4.1.1 Ensure all the material handling equipment is available before the movement of solvent barrel.
4.1.2 Shift the barrel using the barrel trolley from the truck to the storage room.
4.1.3 Ensure that the fire extinguishers are available and are ready to use.
4.1.4 Ensure all the electrical fittings are flameproof one.
4.1.5 Any additional electrical fitting in the room to be added should be of flameproof one.
4.2 Sampling:
4.2.1 Ensure the sampling chemist wears the PPE’S like 3M mask, Nitrile gloves, goggles and PVC apron.
4.2.2 Ensure the sampling chemist uses all the tools like drum opener, sampling rod, etc,.
4.2.3 Ensure that the chemist will not hammer the barrel while opening the lid and he will use the proper tools in a proper manner to open the lid smoothly.
4.3 Dispensing of Bulk Solvent:
4.3.1 Sign the solvent permit and enter the time.
4.3.2 Ensure that the quantity of solvent dispensed by the store officer is as mentioned in the Solvent Permit.
4.3.3 Ensure that only the required quantity enters the shop floor, while the rest remains in the storage area in the storeroom.
4.3.4 Issue the quantity required for the coating solution preparation.
4.3.5 After the coating solution is prepared, ensure that only 30 liters is taken for coating in case of Neocota at a time and 20 liters for conventional coating pans at a time.
4.3.6 Ensure the solvent register is filled on line.
4.3.7 Any remaining solvent should be returned back to the storage room without fail.
4.4 Issuance of Solvent for Analysis:
4.4.1 On receipt of the material request, ensure that it is signed by the department head and the stores head.
4.4.2 Issue only 5 liters maximum (2 x 2.5 liters bottles) of Methanol and Acetonitrile, other solvents not more than 2.5 liters at a time.
4.4.3 Ensure that the entire solvent is used completely.
4.4.4 Any residual solvent removing should be returned to the stores in the evening if there is no continuation or night shift or the lab is closed / locked.
4.5 Solution preparation / manufacturing :
4.5.1 Ensure that the operator/chemist wears goggles, 3M mask, nitrile hand gloves and PVC apron
4.5.2 Ensure the earthing and bonding done properly.
