MACHINE SAFEGUARDING

4.0 APPLICABILITY
This procedure is applicable to the Xxx (India) Pvt. Ltd., Xxx Plant only.

5.0 PURPOSE
This policy is to establish a safeguarding procedure or administrative control for any moving parts of a piece of machinery or equipment in which employees can gain access to.

6.0 RESPONSIBLE DEPARTMENT
Quality Assurance, Engineering, Production and Warehouse

7.0 RESPONSIBILITY
EHS Coordinator, Engineering and Maintenance.

8.0 PROCEDURES
To implement the machine-safeguarding program, the following elements are required:

8.1 Evaluation
All equipment must be evaluated for any potential hazards to it poses to any person employees (See Machine Guarding Checklist). Evaluations shall be done prior to modification, repair, and startup. After the evaluations are completed and safeguarding needs are identified, safeguarding must be applied immediately.

8.0 Employee Training

8.0.1 Employees working with the equipment must have specific training to use the equipment safely and why the safeguard is important.

8.0.2 What the employees are required to do if the safeguard is damaged, missing or unable to provide adequate protection e.g. stop equipment and call maintenance technician.

8.0.3 All employees in the area who operate or maintain equipment must attend the lockout and tag out training.

8.1 Maintenance

8.1.1 Dangerous parts of the machines are securely fenced and safe guards shall be kept in the position at all times.

8.1.2 Maintenance and repairing machines often means working in a potential hazard area. Therefore, the lockout and tag out procedures to prevent accidental machine start-up or expected energy release. For details refer to Lockout and Tag out policy INM-03-019

8.1.3 The area around the machinery is free from slippery substances spilled/spread around it before its maintenance.
