Procedure for Backwash of Activated Carbon Filter

1.0 OBJECTIVE
To lay down a procedure for backwash of ‘Activated Carbon Filter’.
2.0 SCOPE
This SOP is applicable to Formulations Units
2.1.0 AREAS
2.1.1 D.M. water plant.
3.0 RESPONSIBILITY
Jr. technical officer / Executive (Production)
4.0 ACCOUNTABILITY
Manager production.
5.0 PROCEDURE
5.1.0 PRECAUTIONS
5.1.1 Before starting the backwash all valves should be closed.
5.1.2 Do not start raw water pump unless and until the valves CFV-3 and CFV-4 are open.
5.2.0 PRE STARTUP
5.2.1 Ensure the water level is up to the required level.
5.2.2 Valves SFV-1 and SFV-2 of sand filter should be open.
5.2.3 Put ‘ON’ main electrical supply switch.
5.3.0 OPERATION (Back Wash)
5.3.1 Disconnect the link of activated carbon filter with D.M. water plant by closing all valves.
5.3.2 Open the valves CFV-3 and CFV-4.
5.3.3 Start the raw water pump.
5.3.4 Continue the back wash for 5 minutes.
5.4.0 SHUT DOWN
5.4.1 After back wash is over stop the raw water pump.
5.4.2 Close valves CFV-3, CFV-4 and open CFV-1 and CFV-2 for continuing normal operation.
