Safe Disposal of Chemical Containers

5.0 PURPOSE
To provide guidelines for safe disposal of chemical containers.

8.0 PROCEDURE

8.1 General

8.1.1 Only experienced and properly trained persons are to handle any filled or empty chemical containers.

8.1.2 Always read the label on the container of any chemical carefully before segregating it for disposal.

8.1.3 Empty hazardous materials containers smaller than 20 liters shall be disposed of with on‑site non‑hazardous refuse.

8.1.4 It is the duty of department to see that the concerned associate of his department cleans the spill of any chemical, if occurred.

8.1.5 All the chemical containers need to be washed properly and ensured for its safe disposal. The containers (or inner liners) must be properly rinsed before disposal.

8.1.6 Do not forget to remove or deface labels provided by the supplier for the identification of the chemical contents after /during wash.

8.1.1 Do not loose or destroy the protection caps/guards until the container is washed properly.

8.1.2 In case any chemical container such as drum or can is carrying the Xxx logo, it should be removed or repainted by BLACK color in a way that the name of company i.e. Xxx logo is not illegible. This should be done before the container is received by the contractor engaged for waste disposal.

8.1.3 The other containers like bags or cartoons should be destroyed before handling over to the contractor for waste disposal.

8.1.4 Use of suitable/ appropriate gloves and eye goggles (if required) should be ensured for washing of the chemical containers.

8.1.5 Use a trolley or other suitable device for transporting chemical containers (big containers or more than 02 nos.), even for a short distance. The chemical containers will have to be properly secured to the trolley during transportation.

8.2 Storage

8.2.1 Store chemical containers in location free from fire risk and away from sources of heat and ignition.

8.2.2 The storage compound should be kept clear and access should be restricted to authorized personnel only. The compound should be clearly marked as 'Empty containers’ or ‘Filled Containers’

8.2.3 Store full and empty chemical containers separately and arrange full containers so that the oldest stock is used first.

8.2.4 Smoking, use of flames, and hot works, in the vicinity of waste storage area should be prohibited if flammables are present in it.

8.2.5 Filled and empty (before washing) chemical containers are tagged as FILLED and EMPTY, along with their respective names to know their status.
