CONFINED SPACE ENTRY

4.0 APPLICABILITY
This document is applicable to Xxx (India) Pvt. Ltd., Xxx Plant only.

5.0 PURPOSE
To establish safety procedure when entering or working in a confined space.

6.0 SCOPE
The intent of this policy is to provide specific guidance to the employee who needs to do job in a confined area.

9.0 DEFINITION
9.1 Confined Space: Enclosures having limited exits with the opening spaces that not more than four feet (1.2m).
Confine spaces includes but not limited to:
Raw / Distilled Water Tank
Chimney
Boiler
Septic tank
Manhole
Recycle Water Tank
Diesel / Fuel Oil Tanks
Mix Tanks
Sump
Anaerobic tank

10.0 PROCEDURES

10.1 The permit application form can be obtained from Documentation Center.

10.2 Employees are not allowed to enter a confined space unless they are authorized.

10.3 Associates are to apply for the confined space permit and submit to the Department Manager and EHS Coordinator prior to the commencement of any works. For Solution mixing tank, since such work is considered routine, they must have plant procedures & training to cover this activity.

10.4 The application of the confined space entry permit is valid for that particular shift.

10.5 It will be the responsibility of the associate of the department concerned to make sure that the vessel or any confined space is properly flushed and free from gas, fumes vapor, or dust.

10.6 Employee must complete the safety checklist (attached) and submit the permit to the EHS Coordinator for approval before entry into a confined space.

10.7 Contractors or employees must notify the EHS Coordinator prior to confined space entry. A person shall be allowed to enter any confined space only if the oxygen level inside the vessel is greater than 19%.

10.8 A standby attendant must be present at the point of entry when a person is in a confined space. He must also hold one end of the safety belt while other of it is tied to the person inside the confined space.

10.9 The standby attendant shall maintain constant visual contact with the person in the confined space.

10.10 The standby attendant must be equipped and trained to use emergency and personal protective equipment. This includes, the respirators, hoist equipment and rescue equipment.

10.11 The contractors or the respective department will provide all the equipment for testing and monitoring and ensure it is properly calibrated as per manufacturer’s requirements or recommendations.

10.1 Employees shall be adequately trained in the procedures to use the respirators, emergency rescue, and appropriate personal protective equipment.

a. No smoking is allowed at the site.
b. Use only non-sparkling tools.
c. Flameproof lamp or light is permitted therein
