HANDLING OF HAZARDOUS CHEMICALS - SOP

1.0. PURPOSE:
To provide the procedure for Handling of Hazardous Chemicals
2.0. SCOPE:
It covers the procedure for handling of Hazardous Chemicals
i) Arsenic trioxide ii) Ethylene glycol
iii)Diethylene glycol iv)Antimony trichloride
3.0. RESPONSIBILITY:

5.0. DEFINITION:
Hazardous chemicals are the one which are corrosive ,poisonous and likely to be carcinogenic.
6.0. PROCEDURE:
6.1. The poisonous chemicals should be received against indent and the quantity should be minimum in pack.
6.2. The material should be received by authorized personal & name of the item, date of receipt to be recorded.
6.3. A log book should be maintained with date, quantity used & the purpose.
6.4. The container after weighing should be properly closed and handed over to the authorized personal and should be kept under lock and key.
6.5. Cleaning of dispensing tools should be done with plenty of water and with antidote in case of poisonous chemicals.
6.6. PRECAUTION:
6.6.1. People with open wound should not handle the poisonous chemicals
6.6.2. A pro-pipette should be used to pipette out the poisonous solution.
DO NOT PIPETTE DIRECTLY THROUGH MOUTH
6.7. SAFETY MEASURES
Use of gloves, nose mask, mouth cover, safety goggles

First Aid treatment for Poisonous Chemicals

Arsenic Compounds
EFFECTED AREA
Lungs
FIRST AID MEASURES
Remove from exposure, and warm.. Break a capsule of Amyl Nitrate and give a capsule by inhaling for every15–30 sec. Repeat for 2 - 3 minutes. Apply artificial respiration.

Skin
FIRST AID MEASURES
Drench the skin with plenty of water and wash with soap and water. Remove the contaminated clothing.
EFFECTED AREA
Mouth
FIRST AID MEASURES
Wash out thoroughly with plenty of water.

B Ethylene Glycol
EFFECTED AREA
Mouth
FIRST AID MEASURES
Wash out thoroughly with plenty of water and induce emesis. Obtain medical attention immediately.

ANTIDOTES (EMETICS)
FIRST AID MEASURES
In case of arsenic poisoning & ethylene glycol or diethylene glycol poisoning, a table spoonful of common salt in a cup of water is given repeatedly until vomiting occurs.
INSTRUCTION
Arsenic compounds can be destroyed by diluting with 10% Sodium hydroxide and destroyed with plenty of water.
Ethylene glycol and diethylene glycol can be destroyed by mixing with 80 to 90 times of water and drained to ET plant.
